The Healing Place of
Wake County has received the license to open the sobering up center,
non-medical detox area at the new women's facility. The Division of
Facility Services in the Dept. of Health and Human Services issued the
license on April 21, 2006. The detox unit will open on Monday, April
24, 2006.
The non-medical detox
unit offers a monitored 24-7 facility where persons who are intoxicated
or on drugs can safely regain sobriety. Law enforcement, emergency
medical personnel, and others can drop off those who are under the
influence rather than place the person in jail or transport them to
WakeMed. This option saves taxpayers and hospital officials hundreds of
thousand of dollars a year.
A similar unit has
operated at the men's facility since April 2001. Since opening, 3826
men have been admitted to regain their sobriety. Of these, 60% decided
to join The Healing Place program and begin the process to return to
society as productive and sober citizens.
