The Healing Place of Wake County opens the new facility for
women and children on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006. The facility will welcome the
first guests in the emergency overnight shelter on Jan. 16.
The board, donors, staff and Wake County supporters
celebrated the opening with an open house of the facility on 3304 Glen Royal
Road in Raleigh on Sunday afternoon. The group also celebrated the fifth
anniversary of the men's facility which opened on Jan. 15, 2001.
Speaking at the dedication, Board Chair Bob Bilbro, praised
The Wake County ABC Board, Wake County, local corporations, foundations and
individuals for their generous support of both the capital campaign and the
on-going operating support for both facilities.
Retiring board members Barbara Goodmon, Burley Mitchell and
Tom Covington were honored for their years of leadership and service.
The substance abuse recovery program will be implemented in
steps beginning with the emergency overnight shelter. Shelter guests who wish
to join the program will enter the Off The Street I program. From there, they
will work their way through the Off The Street II, Phase I and Phase II
portions. Clients reach Silver Chip status when they transition back into the
community with independent employment and housing.
The non-medical, social detoxification center will open
when the license is approved later this spring. The facility will eventually
house 88 homeless, addicted women.
The men's facility has provided more than 260,000 nights of
shelter by the end of Dec. 2005.
