Gala Salute to Barbara Goodmon

Raleigh, NC:  The Healing Place of Wake County announced today a GALA SALUTE TO BARBARA GOODMON to benefit the work of The Healing Place of Wake County.  The event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at the RBC Center from 6:00-10:00 pm.

The Healing Place of Wake County is saluting one of its founders, Barbara Lyons Goodmon.  Barbara is an example of a firm belief in the ability of individuals to get things done.   A registered nurse and the wife of Capitol Broadcasting president, Jim Goodmon, Barbara has dedicated her life to making things better for people who have no political power and no voice.  Currently, the Executive Director of the A.J. Fletcher Foundation, Barbara is a lifelong student. She got a bachelor’s degree from Meredith College in 1994 and later completed her Master of Liberal Studies at NC State.  She was honored as the Distinguished Alumna of the NC State University College of Humanities and Social Services in 2003.  In 1999, she was one of the visionary founders of The Healing Place of Wake County.  Together with Fred Barber and Maria Spaulding, she sold  the idea of an innovative rescue, recovery and rehabilitation facility for homeless people with alcohol and drug addiction.  Today, two facilities—one for men and one for women & their children—stand as a testament to her commitment to helping people who don’t have a voice.  The men’s facility opened in 2001 and has provided over 300,000 beds of shelter to the homeless of Wake County.  The women’s facility opened in 2006 and has provided 16,000 beds of shelter.  The Healing Place has a 68% success rate with the clients who have completed the program.  Barbara continues as a driving force behind the success of The Healing Place.

Gala entertainment for the evening will feature the NC School of the Arts Jazz Band; the Fletcher Opera Company; Broadway stars Roz Ryan and Terry Mann; inspirational singer, Ester Nicholson; country singer Larry Gatlin; Raleigh native and Tony award winner Beth Leavel, Raleigh’s own television star Sharon Lawrence, Mrs. North Carolina Staci Wallace, and legendary dance performer, Chuck Davis and the African American Dance Ensemble.

Corporate tables, individual tables and seats are available.  For more information, contact Barrett Joyner, Director of Development, The Healing Place of Wake County, 919-865-2537.
