A Message from our President, CEO: Dennis Parnell

The Importance of Recovery Oriented Peer Support

Supporters often ask me what makes The Healing Place different from other treatment programs and what aspects of the program do I most attribute our remarkable success? While there are many complex factors involved, far and above is the fact that The Healing Place is a long term peer oriented program. Every aspect of the program is governed by peer intervention and that fact is what most separates us from other programs.

Not only do we rely on our men and women to teach the classes and work individually with each other on accountability, but they also cook the food, take care of our beautiful buildings and grounds, perform the security functions, and even take care of our most honored guests, our cats! This “hand up, rather than hand out”, puts the responsibility and decision making directly where it needs to be…in the hands of our clients. Without a doubt it is the most significant reason for our 70% success rate of those who complete the program.

Across the country, peer support is finally getting the attention it deserves. This is true for mental health as well as Alcohol and other Drug Problems. “Recovery Oriented Systems of Care”, are just beginning to get a foothold and at its very core is the training and hiring of the very individuals who understand, empathize and empower our citizens that suffer from addiction and mental disorders. The success of peer support is not new and for decades has been found in support groups for other illnesses, such as cancer and heart disease as well as in survivor groups such as divorce and loss of a child.

As we move into 2013, our plans include expanding our services by offering peer support services on an outpatient basis to adults as well as our most impressionable citizens, our adolescents. Our children are our future and deserve the best care provided directly in their own community. If they are negatively influenced by their peers, think what positive peer mentoring can do! Please join us with your characteristic support as we move forward in this great endeavor!

Best Regards,
